Certificates

An academic certificate is a coherent body of coursework designed to reflect specialized expertise and signifies that a student has successfully completed a series of courses. Earning a certificate may provide professional advancement opportunities and build a strong foundation for future graduate study.

A certificate consists of completing 12–15 credits. All courses are delivered online through Engineering Outreach (EO) and already exist in the graduate curricula. The following academic certificates are delivered through EO:

Power System Protection and Relaying

All students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Follow these steps to apply and complete a certificate:

  1. New Students: Students will need to apply online for admission as a Graduate Level/Academic Certificate student.

Certificate-only students will be classified as certificate seeking at the graduate level and are not eligible for financial aid.  International graduate certificate applicants must meet the University of Idaho language requirement. Due to the nature of these programs, immigration regulations prohibit students requiring an F-1 or J-1 visa admission to certificate-only programs.

Current Graduate Students: Students already admitted as graduate students need to complete a graduate change of admission form (the bottom of page 2 of the Change of Curriculum form) to add a Graduate Academic Certificate as an additional curriculum to their study plan. Proper signatures will be needed from the department and turned in at the Registrar's Office for processing.
  2. Track your progress for your certificate in VandalWeb by first selecting the Student tab, then select Degree Audit & Transcripts, and choose Degree Audit.
  3. When you’ve completed all course requirements, apply for the certificate award on VandalWeb by first selecting the Student tab then Apply to Graduate. See information about the graduation application and deadlines at the Registrar's Website.
