Process & Performance Excellence

This academic certificate is offered by the Statistics Department. While not solely reliant on Six Sigma theory and methods, Six Sigma nonetheless plays an essential role in Process & Performance Excellence and drives financial and other results considered critical by leading organizations around the globe. Six Sigma is a highly structured strategy for acquiring, assessing and applying customer, competitor and enterprise intelligence for the purposes of achieving superior innovations in design of products, processes or systems. This program integrates and emphasizes the dominant tools and strategies employed in innovation and design applications of Six Sigma. Program content is consistent with the body of knowledge associated with Six Sigma Black Belt Certification and addresses Six Sigma's DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) and DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) approaches to innovation and design with other key program elements including Project Management and Lean Manufacturing/Lean Enterprise. Elective courses listed are intended to accommodate the applications and intersections of Six Sigma with business, engineering and other environments.

Certificate Coordinator: Chris Williams, Ph.D.

All students must contact the certificate coordinator to discuss background qualifications prior to starting the certificate. The certificate coordinator is a faculty member who will advise you before you declare for the certificate and while you are taking courses.

Certificate Application Prerequisite:
All students must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

▼ Steps to Get Started and Complete This Certificate
Follow these steps to apply and complete this certificate:
  1. Contact the certificate coordinator to discuss your eligibility for the certificate. You will need to submit unofficial transcripts to the certificate coordinator that show you have completed a B.S. degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher before you may begin your certificate courses. If you are an international student, the transcript should be mapped to a U.S. grading scale.
  2. Apply for admission to the University of Idaho by following the steps to Get Started.
    Graduate Students:
    • You may use up to three approved transfer credits toward the certificate with departmental approval.
    Nondegree Students:
    • You must earn all certificate course credits from the University of Idaho unless you plan to work toward a graduate degree in the same department.
    • If you are considering transferring the certificate course credits into a graduate program, you must contact the certificate coordinator and department for early advising. A maximum of 12 approved credits taken as a nondegree student or at another institution can be transferred toward a master's degree.
    • You will be required to obtain permission from the instructor prior to registering for a 500-level (graduate) course.
  3. After you have been admitted, declare the certificate by submitting an Academic Certificate Declaration (the bottom of page 2 of the Change of Curriculum form) to the certificate coordinator for department chair approval.
  4. Track your progress for your certificate on VandalWeb by first selecting the Student Information tab then the Degree Audit folder.

    Certificate Policy:
    • A grade of 'B' or higher is required in all coursework for certificates offered by the College of Engineering.
    • Coursework must not be more than five years old unless it is being used in conjunction with the completion of a graduate degree.
  5. When you’ve completed all course requirements, apply for the certificate award on VandalWeb by first selecting the Student Information tab then the Apply for Degree or Certificate folder.
