Academic Certificate
The University of Idaho offers academic certificates in various academic disciplines. An academic certificate is a coherent body of work designed to reflect specialized expertise. Earning a certificate may provide professional advancement opportunities and build a strong foundation for future graduate study.
Certificate courses already exist in the graduate curricula, and all required courses are delivered online by Engineering Outreach. On-campus students have a broader array of courses to choose from, which are listed in the
University of Idaho General Catalog
> Departments of Instruction > Statistical Science.
The Statistics Academic Certificate was developed for graduate students majoring in disciplines other than statistics who wish to develop competency in statistics. Students are not required to be actively pursuing a graduate degree in order to participate in the certificate program, but must satisfy graduate admission requirements at the University of Idaho. The certificate program is designed to give the student a background in the statistical methods that are applicable to their major field of study.
Prerequisites
Undergraduate and nondegree students must meet the minimum GPA admission requirement of 3.0 or higher in an undergraduate degree program to enroll in 500-level courses; undergraduates must also have senior standing;
Sufficient background in statistics as determined by the certificate coordinator, including successful completion of Stat 251 Principles of Statistics or Stat 301 Probability and Statistics or equivalent;
Admission to the University of Idaho;
All students must submit the
Academic Certificate Declaration
on p. 2 of the
Change of Curriculum form
to the certificate coordinator for department chair approval;
Review Steps to Certificate Completion
Students must contact the certificate coordinator to discuss background qualifications prior to starting the certificate.
Course Selection
This certificate consists of 15 credits selected from the courses listed below and approved by the certificate coordinator. While on-campus students have a somewhat broader array of courses to choose from, the list of courses below enables students at a distance to obtain the certificate via the Engineering Outreach program. Graduate (500-level) courses may require additional prerequisites or permission from the instructor prior to registration; and some courses may require use of Minitab or SAS software. Students must earn a grade of
"C"
or better in each course taken to qualify for this certificate; course work may not be more than five (5) years old unless it is being used in conjunction with the completion of a graduate degree. Elective options allow program participants to pursue general statistics, business and industrial, or more mathematically oriented paths. Refer to the
